Density dependence of the s-wave repulsion in pionic atoms

چکیده

Several mechanisms of density dependence of the s-wave repulsion in pionic atoms, beyond the conventional model, are tested by parameter fits to a large (106 points) set of data from 16O to 238U, including ‘deeply bound’ states in 205Pb. Special attention is paid to the proper choice of nuclear density distributions. A density-dependent isovector scattering amplitude suggested recently by Weise to result from a density dependence of the pion decay constant is introduced and found to account for most of the so-called anomalous repulsion. The presence of such an effect might indicate partial chiral symmetry restoration in dense matter. The anomalous repulsion is fully accounted for when an additional relativistic impulse approximation term is included in the potential. PACS: 13.75-n; 13.75.Gx; 25.80Hp

1 The s-wave repulsion and deeply bound pionic atoms: fact and fancy * Fits to a large data set of pionic atoms show that the 'missing' s-wave repulsion is accounted for when a density dependence suggested recently by Weise is included in the isovector term of the s-wave pion optical potential. The importance of using large data sets is demonstrated and the role of deeply bound pionic atom stat...

Evidence for partial chiral symmetry restoration from pionic atoms

Extensive data on strong interaction effects in pionic atoms are analyzed with a density-dependent isovector scattering amplitude suggested recently by Weise to result from a density dependence of the pion decay constant. Most of the so-called ‘missing s-wave repulsion’ is removed when adopting this approach, thus indicating a partial chiral symmetry restoration in dense matter. The resulting p...

The in - medium isovector πN amplitude from low energy pion scattering

Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV positive and negative pions by Si, Ca, Ni and Zr have been measured as part of a study of the pion-nucleus potential across threshold. The 'anomalous' repulsion in the s-wave term was observed, as is the case with pionic atoms. The extra repulsion can be accounted for by a chiral-motivated model where the pion decay constant is modi...

Renormalization of the isovector πN amplitude in pionic atoms

The extraction of the isovector s-wave πN amplitude from pionic atoms is studied with special emphasis on uncertainties and their dependence on the assumptions made regarding the neutron density distributions in nu-clei and on the size of the data base used. Only 'global' analyses of pionic-atom data reveal a discrepancy between the extracted isovector s-wave πN amplitude b 1 = −0.108 ± 0.007 m...
